Seeing the same ‘softening in Q4’ here, and one thing that helped was tying our bids to a simple break-even calc that updates weekly with gate prices and fuel — , those diesel swings kill margins. We also used machine telematics to cut idle on the harvester and forwarder by about 8%, which gave us a little room to stay competitive without chasing every penny. If mills balk, add a 30-day reprice clause to the bid so you’re not locked in when prices whipsaw; anyone tried that lately?

Swapped to Cyclone DDS with shared-memory transport and fused camera→preproc→detector into one composed process; that alone cut ROS 2+ML latency on our small ROV by about 25 ms around 30 m depth. Key is “match QoS end-to-end”: best_effort, depth=1 on the vision path, and use a separate reliable recorder if you need logs. If you’re on GPU, pin the ML process and DDS threads to isolated cores to kill the random spikes.
